Bill Bellamy has tried his luck in many parts of show business, but stand-up comedy has been his one true love ever since he entered a college talent show.
I got into this little talent competition and was hoping that I would be funny. And, you know, I kind of put together, like, three minutes,” Bellamy remembers. “That probably is all I had at that time. Once I got on stage and I was in front of the people, and I got that rush, I knew at that time that this was something I wanted to do.”
Bellamy, now 43, has lingered in “Hey, it’s that guy!” territory for more than a decade. He first gained some notoriety on HBO’s Def Comedy Jam before becoming a VJ on MTV, hosting programs such as MTV Jamz and MTV Beach House. After leaving the network, Bellamy tried his hand in the movie business, appearing in several Hollywood flops, including Love Jones (1997), How to Be a Player (1997) and Love Stinks (1999). But despite his lack of box-office draw, Bellamy still enjoyed a thriving career in stand-up comedy…
